Insanadiorama

This exhibition by Karen Strang was shown at the Smith Art Gallery and Museum in Stirling during September 1995. It subsequently formed part of the "Brought To Book" exhibition at the Collins Gallery in Glasgow, which toured during 1996 to Rochdale and Shetland.

The work comprises twenty-eight wood and glass panels, each with an associated text card. An audio tape tour of the exhibition adds another level to the works.

These pages contain the texts which form an integral part of this exhibition, along with a few graphics. (All the text information is true, barring that for one plate! (1) )

The work has six "chapters":
  1. Mystique
  2. Madness
  3. Martyrdom
  4. Myth
  5. Matriarchy
  6. Miscellany

Clare Henry's review article in The Herald (27th November 1995) says that the installation is "an eyecatching exhibit and beneath its superficial banal sweet and happy surface ... lurks a dark subtext".

Note:

(1) The false plate is no.24, but truth may be close to fiction, judging from an article Housewives of the world unite behind dusters (on the First World Congress of Housewives in Buenos Aires), which appeared in the Sunday Times during November 1995. Return.
