Here's an interview with Peter Russell, one of the artists who also helped by cleaning out the hut and taking some photos.
1) What did you think of the idea of having a gallery in a garden shed?
PR: I thought it was a superb idea: subverting the gallery system; artists doing it for themselves; not surrendering to the metropolitan tyrany of taste; by-passing the hierarchy of aesthetic control; stepping outside the coterie of class-specific art production.
2) Did you find the experience enjoyable?
PR: Yes. From the first discussions, through the logo design, painting the hut, the opening, conducting visitors round the exhibition.
3) Are you keen to do it again?
PR: You bet I am. I wish to apply for a residency, a new collaborative show, a Hut tour.
4) How big do you think this project could get?
PR: How big is your imagination? Depends on what tickles other people, who might throw their weight behind the project, and the energies and limitations of the participants.
5) Does the website have enough information/pictures for the people who can't see the hut in real life?
PR: It has captured the attention of people I've talked to. You have to accept that exhaustive info might make the site unwieldy - so, don't overload is my advice.
6) Did you enjoy working with the other artists and other people involved?
PR: That is one of the great pleasures of the project. I'm less and less persuaded of the validity of solipsism, autograph works of the individual produced in isolation. In that sense, the hut gallery could signpost the way to grater collaborative efforts
7) Was the work to clean the hut up before it was ready for the artworks enjoyable?
PR: With all that Strang-Dickson hospitality, you're joking? Unfortunate hazards such as wild-life are to be expected, old clothes a necessity.
8) Are you planning to ask other artist friends to put something into the next hut exhibition?
PR: I'm not presuming on being asked to be involved, but, yes, I would relish the opportunity
9) Would you like to see the hut move around from garden to garden or stay where it is?
PR: I'd like to see other hut-owners accept our show, and perhaps originate their exhibitions to tour sites such as this.
10) If you were to do something individually inside the hut (Unlimited space) what would it be?
PR: Curate a show, or otherwise collaborate with artists, following a residency, perhaps.
